Almost 1 BILLION people on the planet don’t have access to clean drinking water. Unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all disease and kill more people than all forms of violence combined, including war. Charity: Water is working to change that.
I became familiar with Charity: Water’s work last year when I first came across this PSA while doing a project about water in Africa. It left me speechless.
I recently came across CW’s Web site again & found myself re-inspired and incredibly humbled. How often I turn on the kitchen sink or turn on the shower and take for granted the CLEAN water that comes out. It happens all the time.
Charity: Water has made it its mission to share the importance of clean water in saving lives AND has set out to provide clean water for every person on the planet. So far Charity: Water has funded 2,900 projects and provided 1.3 million people with clean water — and it’s only the beginning.
So how did it start? It started in September. Four years ago this month, Scott Harrison gave up his birthday in an effort to change the lives of strangers. Take a moment to read his story, he’s pretty awesome.
And every September since, Scott has continued to give up his birthday & has encouraged others around the world to do the same. Check out last year’s video & see how it all began.
This September, Charity: Water has done it again. Thousands of people around the world (including Will & Jada Smith) gave up their September birthdays and on Sept. 10 the first clean water of the September Campaign was found in the Central African Republic. This one makes me smile.
The campaign for clean water won’t end this month or this year, it won’t end until every person around the world has access to clean water. So if you’re birthday isn’t in September, fret not, you can still give the gift of clean water by giving up your birthday regardless of the month.
So ditch the presents this year & be a part of a global movement…I can’t think of a better gift.
